Mountains, is the dominating image of Guarda district. The biggest mountain in Portugal, Serra da Estrela, is the central tourist attraction but there are much more. Guarda, the capital is a small nice city, and, around the mountain, Covilhã, Seia, Gouveia and other are common destinations for those who want to stay close to the mountain.
Inland, traditional villages like Sortelha or Linhares da Beira do deserve the visit, such as the fortified villages along the Spanish border, like Almeida or Castelo Mendo. In the top north, Douro river is a must, with Barca d'Alva by the border, close to the cave figures of Vila Nova de Fozcoa.
